Frances and John Brush, antique dealers from Merritt Island, Florida came into the possession of an 1896 Excelsior Diary that had belonged to Almond Charles Auldon of Lakeview, Oregon. Frances is also the Music Director at Grace United Methodist Church in Merritt Island where Ivan Corbin was pastor through June, 2015. John is a native of Oregon. Knowing that Ivan loves history and family history, Frances put this diary in Ivan's hands. A couple years later Ivan and Debbie decided to transcribe, annotate and find links to people and items mentioned in the diary prior to a trip out west which would now include delivery of the diary and copy of the transcription of the diary to the Lake County Museum in Lakeview, Oregon. This delivery occurred on September 25, 2015.

A.C., born in Iowa to Ohio born parents, had lived in Lakeview for 10 years at the time of his 1896 diary entries. Born in 1855, A.C. summarized his life on his forty-first birthday and the day after this way:

Saturday, Mar. 7, 1896

Lakeview, Or.

Probably about ½ in of snow fell during the night. A chilly wind most of the day. Pleasant part of the P.M. Recd a letter from Susie.

I am 41 years old to day. Can't realize it, but the Almanac says so. Forty one years of a squandered life. Have been in Lakeview ten years next August, and that time is worse than thrown away. Have a lot out in the brush the other side of Portland that cost $275.-- Probably not worth $50.-- A grainry that cost $300.-- Possibly worth $200.-- 85,000 lbs of barley possibly worth $750.-- and $75.-- in cash. That is my accumulation for 41 years. Another ten or twenty at this rate will probably take me to the poor-house, or the Insane Asylum. Don't know which is preferable.

Sunday, Mar. 8, 1896

Lakeview, Or.

Staying with A.Y. Beach. Pub. of the Lake County Examiner. Sprinkled a little snow in the forenoon. Bright and pleasant at sundown. Wrote to Susie in P.M. Yesterday commenced the last chapter of a story to be entitled "A Wasted Life". Am going to write backwards on it.

In transcribing the diary we discovered that his life was much less wasted and he was much less a failure than his feelings were telling him in March of 1896. As you read this transcription and go to the links we found that tell about the many people, organizations and places he mentions in his diary we hope you will come to the same conclusion.

Throughout this diary, A.C. corresponds with and finally attends functions in Salem with the mysterious "Susie." We have little clue as to who this is, but found it somewhat strange that he chose to attend the State Teacher's Institute. But, in the newspaper coverage of the Institute it lists the attendees and two of them are Susie and Clara Hall of Monmouth, Polk County, Oregon. Could this Susie be "the" Susie? We may never know.
