Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 536. CAPTAIN A. C. FISHER one of the enterprising men of Astoria and copartner in the firm of Fisher Brothers, was born in Germany, in 1846. In 1855 his parents emigrated to America and located in Lyme county, Connecticut, where they engaged in agricultural pursuits, until 1864, when the entire family removed to Oregon and located a homestead, in Clatsop county. The subject of this sketch accompanied his parents through the various changes, until reaching Oregon, when he formed a partnership with his brother, Henry, and they built the schooner, "Ella Nora," which they operated for ten years, doing general freighting business about the river and harbor. In 1874 our subject purchased an interest in the steamboat, "Onietta," in partnership with D. K. Warren, C. A. McGuire and Captain Babbidge, and together they ran the boat between Astoria and Siskiyou, in a general freight and passenger business, in 1876 Captain Fisher bought the steamer,' "Sam," and ran it on the same route for several years, developing such a trade that greater facilities were required and he then built the steamer, "Electric," which he operated until September, 1889, when he sold out and bought the interest of Louis Wilson, of the firm of Wilson & Fisher and then established the firm of Fisher Brothers, which continued in the same line of merchandise as before, carrying groceries and hardware, also ship-chandlery and agricultural implements. The firm occupy a building erected by Captain Fisher, in 1877, when the streets were unimproved and the work was done from boat along side. Streets and building were completed about the same time and Wilson & Fisher established the present business. The surviving member was born in Lyme county, Connecticut, and came to Oregon with his parents in 1864. Arriving at= mature years he engaged in boating with his brothers, and later was employed in the cannery of A. Booth & Company, in various capacities. In 1876 he took a course at the Commercial Business College, at Portland, and in 1877 he formed the copartnership with Mr. Wilson, and without experience they put up $1,000 each, as working capital, and embarked upon the business, which has since been so successful. From this small beginning their business now averages about $100,000 per year. He was married, in Astoria, in 1877, to Miss Clara Madison, and they have one child, Earl Augustus. Captain Fisher is unmarried. He is a member of I. 0. 0. F. Encampment and one of the exempt firemen. The Fisher brothers own valuable business and resident property, both separately and jointly, and as enterprising, executive business men, are actively enlisted in the development of the city of Astoria. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
