Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 290. ANTON LEVERMANN Anton Levermann is one of the valuable citizens whom the old world has furnished to the United States, and the qualities of industry, thrift and perseverance have placed him with the prosperous agriculturists of the Aumsville district of Marion county. A native of Germany, he was born June 12, 1858, in the province of Westphalia, and his parents, Henry and Mary Annie (Luebke) Levermann, were lifelong residents of that country. In the family were six children: Theodore, who has remained in the fatherland; Anton; Frank, who lives in the state of Texas; and William, Sophie and Annie, all of whom have passed away. Anton Levermann was reared on his father's farm and received a good education. He was well trained in agricultural pursuits and also learned the carpenter's trade in his youth. In 1883, when twenty-five years of age, he yielded to the lure of the new world and lived in the state of Wisconsin for a year. In 1884 he went to Iowa and for thirteen years thereafter followed his trade in Sioux City. He came to Oregon in 1897, settling in Marion county, and bought a ranch of sixty-two acres situated a mile east of Aumsville. A small house stood on the place, which was covered with a dense growth of trees, and through tireless effort he has cleared nearly all of the land, which is now rich and productive. In 1904 he erected a large barn and in 1921 rebuilt the house, which is supplied with many modern improvements. All of his buildings are good and the work of the fields is facilitated by up-to-date equipment. Mr. Levermann purchased an additional tract of forty acres in 1917 and his holdings now comprise one hundred and two acres of desirable land. His principal crops are clover, hay and grain and he also has a fine dairy, keeping a herd of twelve cattle, nine of which are good milch cows. His work is carefully planned and conducted with system and efficiency. In 1886 Mr. Levermann married Miss Mary Henke, who was born in Germany and came to the United States in 1884. Her parents, Johan and Katrina Henke, always resided in Germany and their family numbered six children. Mr. and Mrs. Levermann have six children, all of whom were accorded liberal educational advantages. Henry, the eldest, born in Iowa and now in Portland, Oregon, is married and has a son, Lawrence. Mary is a native of Iowa and the wife of Louis Goebel, by whom she has five children: Merlin, Marvin, Junille, Luella and Andrea May. Kathryn, also a native of the Hawkeye state, and now following the profession of nursing, went overseas during the World war, was assigned to duty at Base Hospital No. 46, later was transferred to Base Hospital No. 3 in France, after which she was ordered to Germany with the Army of Occupation, and was stationed at Treves. Matilda was born in Iowa, and was engaged in teaching for seven years previous to her marriage to W. R. Bernard, of Cheney, Washington, by whom she has four children, Kathryn, Raymond, Robert and Jean. Anne, born in Marion county. completed a course in the Mount Angel Academy, was graduated from the State Normal School at Cheney and is an instructor in the Beach school at Portland, Oregon. Anton, Jr., the youngest member of the family, is also a native of Marion county and assists Ills father in the operation of the ranch. Mr. Levermann was a school director for several years and is always ready to serve his district when needed. He has won the legitimate reward of a life of rightly directed endeavor and the respect accorded him is well deserved. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
