Parsons, Col. William and Shiach, W. S. "An Illustrated History of Umatilla County and of Morrow County." Spokane, WA: W. H. Lever, 1902. p. 400. ARTHUR V. GULLIFORD A prominent wool grower and agriculturist of Umatilla county, we take pleasure in granting to the man whose name initiates this article a representation in this volume. The ability and energy that have made him eminently successful in his business undertakings have, together with his geniality and breadth of mind, given him the respect and esteem of his fellows and placed him in the front ranks of our citizens. He was born to John and Julia Gulliford, in Lane county, Oregon, on April 29, 1860. In 1872 he came with his parents to this county and completed the education in the private high school at Pendleton that had been begun in Lane county. When eighteen years of age he commenced the battle of life for himself, operating first as a sheep herder, at which he continued for three years, gaining a practical knowledge of the business in all its varied details. Through rigid economy he was then enabled to purchase a small band of three hundred and fifty sheep, which proved to be the nucleus of his magnificent holdings of to-day. He operated these with his father and two years later went into partnership with his brother William, which continues until the present time. Together they own over seven thousand head of fine grade Merinos, from which they clip annually between fifty and sixty thousand pounds of first-class wool. Their realty is over five thousand acres of good land. Mr. Gulliford was married in Pendleton, on October 8, 1892, to Miss Ella DeGraff, a native of Illinois. To them have been born four children, Arthur, Ella Grace, Alice J. and Charles J. He is a member of the K. 0. T. M. of Pendleton, and also takes an active part in political matters, while at the present time he is serving in public office. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
