Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 121. ARTHUR W. SIMMONS, D. V. M. Occupying a high place among the professional men of Marion county stands Dr. Arthur W. Simmons, who has earned a splendid reputation as an able and skilled veterinary surgeon and in his practice has been more than ordinarily successful. Dr. Simmons was born near Woodburn, Marion county, Oregon, and is a son of Grover and Inez (Esson) Simmons, both of whom were natives of the Willamette valley, the father having been born near Silverton and the mother near Gervais. Both are now deceased. The paternal grandfather, John Simmons, came to Oregon in the '50s with his father, Samuel Simmons, the family having crossed the plains with ox-teams and covered wagons. The maternal grandparents also came to this state at about the same time. When Arthur W. Simmons was about two years old the family located on the Shannon farm, near Silverton, and there he was reared to manhood. He secured his early education in the Central Howell school in Silverton and then, having decided to become a veterinarian, he entered the University of Toronto, completing his professional studies in the University of Michigan, where he was graduated in 1911 with the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Locating in eastern Oregon, he practiced his profession for a short time and in 1914 came to Silverton, where he has remained to the present time. He lives on the Shannon farm, which comprises three hundred and twenty-four acres, of which he owns two hundred and twenty-four acres, which he has under cultivation, operating also his brother's share as well. He usually spends about half of his time on the farm, devoting the other half to his professional duties. Veterinary practice in recent years has gained greater recognition than ever before and is now used more in the treatment of the ailments of sheep, hogs and cattle than of horses, which formerly comprised the bulk of the practice. Dr. Simmons is the only veterinarian in Silverton and one of the six now located in Marion county, and he has built up a large and remunerative practice, covering a wide radius of surrounding country, for his uniform success has gained him a wide reputation. In 1914 Dr. Simmons was united in marriage to Miss Clarissa Palmer, who was born between Silverton and Mt. Angel and is a daughter of Marion and Josephine E. (Porter) Palmer, the former a successful farmer of this county, mentioned elsewhere in this work. To Dr. and Mrs. Simmons has been born a daughter, Anita Joyce, who was born at Silverton. The Doctor is a member of the Masonic lodge, in which he has passed through the chairs; and is a Scottish Rite Mason and a Noble of the Mystic Shrine. He also belongs to the Willamette Valley Veterinarians Association. A man of earnest purpose and upright life, he is highly regarded throughout the range of his acquaintance and has a host of warm personal friends. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
