"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. p. 506. Grant Co. BRADFORD C. TROWBRIDGE Among the many prosperous and well-to-do farmers and stock raisers of the region that is so richly favored of nature in the inland empire, we are constrained to give especial mention to the gentleman whose name initiates this paragraph, and whose life of worthy achievement has been spent for forty years in this county, where he has wrought with manifestation of ability and sagacity, acquiring, meanwhile, as the meed of his endeavor and thrift, an excellent holding of real estate and much other property. Mr. Trowbridge was born in New York and when ten years of age was removed by his parents to Illinois, where he was raised on a farm. At the age of eighteen years he embarked in life's activities on his own responsibility and became on the thrifty agriculturists of the famed state of agriculture. In 1859 he started for the then famous Pike's Peak, but hearing bad reports while enroute, he turned aside and came to Yreka, California. In that section he mined for two years and then started to the Powder river country, but was allured by the promising country around Canyon City to remain there. The spring of 1862 was the time that he arrived where Canyon City now is and for one year he gave himself to mining, then took up a ranch, where he now lives one-fourth of a mile form John Day on the John Day river. This was the first ranch taken in the territory now embraced in Grant county, and from the spring of 1863 Mr. Trowbridge has been tilling it and adding from time to time to its acreage until he now has the magnificent estate of one thousand acres, which yields him handsome returns annually in bountiful crops. He practices the diversified plan of farming, handling large herds of stock, planting many acres to hay and grain, and also raises much fruit. The marriage of Mr. Trowbridge and Miss Margery Milliney was celebrated in 1888, and to them have been born the following children: Clara, deceased; Charles; one infant, deceased. Mr. Trowbridge is a leading citizen, progressive and public spirited and actively interested in school matters and political affairs, and enjoys the respect and esteem of the entire community. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
