Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 8. B. F. GIESY, M.D. A man of varied talents, Dr. B. F. Giesy has won success in the medical profession as well as in the field of banking and he represents the third generation of the family in Aurora. He was born February 15, 1875, in this community, his parents being Dr. Martin and Martha (Miller) Giesy, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of Ohio. The paternal grandparents journeyed to Oregon with the pioneers of 1855, choosing the overland route. They lived for a short time in the vicinity of South Bend and in 1856 settled in Aurora. Dr. William Keil, who was at the head of the Aurora colony, appointed Martin Giesy as buyer and seller for the settlement and he was also entrusted with other important duties. He began the study of medicine under Dr. Keil, completing his training in Willamette University, which he attended for two years. For a considerable period he engaged in the practice of medicine, being associated with Dr. Keil for a time, arid he was an able financier as well as a successful physician. Death summoned him in 1917 and his wife's demise occurred a year later. Four of their children attained mature years, namely: Julius M., now deceased; Ida, the wife of Colonel Moshberger, of Woodburn; Grover C., who lives near Aurora; and B. F. The public schools of his native town afforded Dr. B. F. Giesy his early educational advantages and he had the advantage of studying under Professor Wolf, a noted educator of the Aurora colony. In 1896 he received the M. D. degree from the University of Oregon. After completing his term as interne in the Good Samaritan Hospital of Portland he opened an office in Aurora and three years later took a postgraduate course in the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia. Dr. Giesy then returned to his home and his practice has since assumed large proportions. He is painstaking and thorough in diagnosis and treats both medical and surgical cases with skill. An astute financier, he is ably guiding the destiny of the Aurora State Bank, the oldest moneyed institution in the town, founded in 1905, the first president having been Henry L. Bents. The bank paid dividends from the start and later was owned by local capitalists. A desirable site was secured in 1905 and on that property was erected the building which has since housed the bank. The present officers are: Dr. B. F. Giesy, president; J. H. Miley, vice president, who has been connected with the institution since its organization and is also a prosperous agriculturist of Marion county: and Zeno Schwab, cashier. All are directors of the bank and their associates on the board are I. A. Miley and Charles Kraxberger, well known ranchers. The institution was started with a capital stock of twenty-five thousand dollars, which has remained unchanged. It has resources of approximately three hundred and fifty thousand dollars and an earned surplus of fifteen thousand dollars. The bank maintains commercial and savings departments and is connected with the Marion County, Oregon State and American Banking Associations. For twenty-two years the institution has been a vital force in the development of this locality and its name is synonymous with stability and integrity. Dr. Giesy is also president of the Willamette Valley Mortgage Loan Company, which was organized in 1913 and has the same officers and directors as the Aurora State Bank. It occupies the same building and the business is largely local. Dr. Giesy is also the executive head of the Monitor State Bank and has promoted the growth and prestige of every institution which he represents. On February 12, 1908, Dr. Giesy married Miss Anna Kraus, a native of Aurora and a daughter of William and Clara (Ehlen) Kraus, who have resided in this locality since 1863. Dr. and Mrs. Giesy have three children, all of whom were born in Aurora : Forrest, a young man of eighteen, now a college student; Lotus C., aged sixteen years, a high school pupil; and Maxine M.. who is thirteen years old and is also attending high school. Dr. Giesy takes a keen interest in fraternal matters and has held all the chairs in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias. He is a York Rite Mason and Shriner and is also connected with the Woodmen of the World. His wife belongs to the Rebekahs, the Pythian Sisters and the Eastern Star and has filled important offices in these organizations. The Doctor was formerly a member of the town council and has served his community in other capacities, manifesting an unselfish devotion to the general good. He has made the most of life, utilizing his capacities and powers to the fullest extent, and is esteemed and honored by his fellowmen. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
