Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 210. C. B. SHAFFNER One of the energetic and successful market gardeners in Lane county is C. B. Shaffner, who has won a high reputation in that line, his twenty-two-acre farm producing remarkable crops. Mr. Shaffner is a native of Ohio, born in 1853, and is a son of William and Mary (Coffman) Shaffner, who were natives of Pennsylvania, the father's natal year being 1824. He followed farming until his retirement late in life, when he moved to a city home. C. B. Shaffner was reared under the parental roof and attended the public schools of Ohio, remaining at home until twenty-one years of age, when he went to South Dakota, where he took up a homestead and a tree claim, and also preempted a tract of land near Pierre in 1882. He devoted his attention entirely to cattle and remained in that state twenty-one years. In 1904 Mr. Shaffner came to his present place in Lane county, where he bought thirty-nine acres of good land, a portion of which he later sold, retaining twenty-two acres, which he devoted to garden produce, principally head lettuce, peppers, carrots, beets, cauliflower and cabbage, which he sells to the cannery and the stores. In 1926 he produced and delivered to the cannery one hundred tons of carrots and sixty tons of beets. While living in South Dakota, Mr. Shaffner was united in marriage to Miss Ella Siefert, who was born in South Bend, Indiana, and who died in 1924. They had six children: Grant, who graduated from the University of Oregon in 1916, and is married and lives in Salem; Florence, the wife of C. P. Hart, of Bellingham, Washington; Bertha, the wife of Harold Wills, of Eugene, and mother of a daughter. Phyllis; Donald; Grace; and Arthur. All are high school graduates. Mr. Shaffner is independent in his political views but takes an active interest in everything relating to the welfare of his community. White living in South Dakota he served as a member of the school board and since coming to Lane county has been a member of the board of county commissioners. His religious affiliation is with the Methodist Episcopal church. He. is a member of the Eugene Fruit Growers Association and the Grange. Standing for all that is best in the life of the community, his record has gained for him the unqualified confidence and respect of his fellowmen. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
