CHARLES EATON

     Born near Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1819.  Came to Oregon in 1843, and settled
at Oregon City, where he was employed by J. W. Nesmith for a time.  Went to
California in 1849, and engaged in mining with his brother Nathan.  In 1880 went
to Puget Sound and settled on Tenalquot Prairie.  During the Indian war of
1855-56 he was in active service as captain of a company of rangers who helped
greatly in protecting the frontier.  Afterwards he became a prominent
stock-raiser in Eastern Washington, and died in 1879.
