Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 308. C. L. OLSEN One of the careful and methodical farmers and respected citizens of Lane county is C. L. Olsen, a man whose history furnishes an example of what may be accomplished through determined purpose, laudable ambition and well directed efforts. Mr. Olsen was born in Denmark in 1860 and is a son of Peter and Botilde (Hansen) Olsen, both of whom died in that country, where the father had followed farming. C. L. Olsen attended a public school in Denmark and at the age of fourteen years began to learn the tailoring trade, at which he was employed until 1890, when, desiring larger opportunity, he emigrated to the United States. He first located in Dunlap, Iowa, where he worked as a tailor for a few years, and then moved to Pender, Nebraska, where he ran a tailor shop and clothing store. Coming to Lane county, Oregon, he bought his present farm, which at that time comprised thirty acres, though he has since sold part of it. He had not previously had practical experience in farming and his first efforts here were confined to market gardening. Later he turned his attention to fruit raising, putting eight acres in apples, one acre in cherries and three acres in peaches. By careful and painstaking attention to his work, he won success and is now very comfortably situated. In 1914 he erected a modem home, and all of the other improvements on the ranch are of a substantial character. Before leaving Denmark, Mr. Olsen was united in marriage to Miss Jorgine Mortensen, who was born and reared in that country, a daughter of Mosten and Hannah Mortensen, both of whom are deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Olsen have been born the following named: Martin P., who is married and lives on the River road; Tilda, formerly employed in the registrar's office of the University of Oregon, who is now the wife of Verne Granger, of Portland, and has a son, Harry; Hannah, wife of Cecil Pitney, living near the home place, and they have two children, Mildred and William; and Matte, who is the wife of Francis Pitney, of Junction City, the Pitneys being brothers. Mr. Olsen has taken a commendable interest in the progress and welfare of his community and was formerly a member and treasurer of the school board, being a member of that body when the River road school was built. He is a member of the Eugene Fruit Growers' Association, of which he was one of the organizers. Kindly and affable in manner, generous in his support of all worthy causes, neighborly and accommodating, he has long been regarded as a loyal and public-spirited citizen of his adopted country. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
