Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 175. CHARLES SCHAFFER Charles Schaffer is another of the native sons of Oregon who have shown sound judgment in remaining here, instead of seeking success in other parts of the country, and his course has been well vindicated, for today he is enjoying not only material success but also, among the people with whom he has spent many years of his life, he commands uniform respect and esteem. Mr. Schaffer was born in Comstock, Douglas county, just over the Lane county line, and is a son of Louis H. and Theresa (Cachner) Schaffer. The mother was born in Pennsylvania, was married soon after the close of the Civil war and now resides on the home place. Louis Schaffer was born in Germany, where he was reared and educated, and when about eighteen years of age came to the United States. He served in the Union array during die Civil war and lived in Pennsylvania until 1886, when he came to Oregon, in which state lie remained continuously until his death, which occurred in 1920. He entered a homestead at Comstock, cleared about twenty acres of his land, and engaged in raising sheep and hay. After living on that place about twenty years, he sold it and in 1906 came to Lane county and bought six hundred acres of land, comprising the present family home. Here he spent the remaining years of his life. To him and his wife were born eight children, as follows: Adam, who lives in Montana; Mary and Louis F., who live with their mother; Annie, who died in 1903; John, who was killed by a train near Albany, Oregon, in 1919; Charles; Frank, who lives in Portland; and William, deceased. Charles Schaffer secured his education in the public schools of Comstock and then entered the employ of the Southern Pacific Railroad, for which he served as section foreman until 1921, when his father having died, he came to the home farm, which he has since managed. He has eighty-five acres under cultivation and raises abundant crops of hay and grain. At first he specialized in raising Duroc hogs, but is now giving much attention to cattle and also raises turkeys. When the father first improved this place he built rail fences, but the cattle frequently got through them into the grain, causing much loss of time as well as crops and wire fencing is now used almost entirely. Mr. Schaffer is exercising mature judgment in his operation of the place, from which he derives a handsome income and his is regarded as one of- die best farms in this section of the country. In 1908 Mr. Schaffer was united in marriage to Miss Rose Struff, who was born in Wisconsin, from which state she was brought to Oregon when a year old by her parents, Peter and Bertha (Kroenig) Struff. The former was born in Switzerland and both are now living in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Schaffer have seven children, Pearl, May B., Nellie, Lillian, Mildred, Charles Henry and Harvey. Mr. Schaffer is a member of the district school board and the Lorane high school board, and is also serving as road patrolman. He has shown a public-spirited interest in everything affecting the welfare and prosperity of his community and county and his activities in a public way have been beneficially resultant. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
