Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 1243. CONRAD SCHULMERICH One of the substantial business men of Hillsborough, is a native of Germany, born December 20, 1827. His father and ancestors were German farmers. He was educated and raised to manhood in Germany, and was drafted and served two years in the German army. He fought in the war of 1848-'49. In 1850 he came to this country, landing in New York. He worked on a farm as a hand for six years and saved his money. He married Margaret Schemeser, of Germany, and they came together to El Dorado county, California, in 1856, where he engaged in mining, and remained eighteen years placer mining. It had been mined over several times, but had been very rich in gold, and had they mined it before any one else had gone over it they could have taken out by their system $5,000 per day. They cut a tunnel through the solid rock 640 feet in length, and it all had to be done by blasting, and cost them $18,000. Mr. Schulmerich's mine made money, and after they had worked it as long as they thought it would pay, it was sold cheap to the Chinese, and they have been working it since. Mr. Schulmerich has raised a family of ten children, and brought away $7,000 with him, and came to Oregon, and purchased a farm three and a half miles south of Hillsborough. It is 320 acres of land, and six years later he purchased a farm of 350 acres. They have been engaged in raising grain and making creamery butter, and also raising very fine cattle. He estimates that he has made about $56 on each cow. The farm is improving all the time, and becoming more and more valuable. He has built a nice brick house in Hillsborough, and in partnership with his son has opened a large general merchandise store under the name of C. Schulmerich & Son. He retired from his farm in October, 1891, purchased a home in Hillsborough, and resides there with his family. He has other property in the city. His son, Herman, is in the meat market business in Hillsborough; William is running one farm, while Edward is running the other; Joseph is assisting in the store; Annie is the wife of James Stephs, of Portland; Kate married Dan Burckholder, and resides in South Tualitin; Maggie, Jessie and Eddie are at home, and attending school at Hillsborough, and Mrs. Schulmerich is still living. He is a Master Mason, a member of the Democratic party, and is a good sample of Oregon's pioneers. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in January 2006 by Diana Smith.
