"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 304. Baker County. DAVIS WILCOX It is always pleasant to trace the career of a successful man, and especially so when we see one that has wrought out by his own skill, energy and industry, a place for himself in the business world, having started at the bottom of the ladder and made his way to the top by genuine worth and ability, such as has the prominent citizen and estimable gentleman whose name appears at the head of this article, who came to this section as a salesman and is now the proprietor of one of the leading mercantile establishments of the entire county. Mr. Wilcox was born on April 13, 1859, near Sharon, Walworth county, Wisconsin, being the son of David and Sarah Wilcox. His father was a tiller of the soil, and our subject received the invigorating exercise in assisting to carry on the farm until 1872, when they all removed to Washington county, Oregon. For seven years he remained there and then came to Umatilla and engaged in the mercantile establishment of John R. Foster & Company, as salesman for three and one-half years. >From there he went to North Powder and operated in the same capacity for Kellogg, Funch & Company until 1887, when he came to Haines and established a branch house for the firm. A little later, he bought out the establishment and is now engaged in the operation of one of the largest general merchandise concerns of the county, carrying everything that is needed by his large and ever-increasing patronage, and to dispense the goods that come from his shelves and warerooms seven salesmen are kept busy, while his time is ever occupied in the oversight of his mammoth business. The marriage of Mr. Wilcox and Mrs. Mattie Hill, daughter of John Ferguson, was solemnized in 1892. He is fraternally affiliated with the A.O.U.W. Lodge No. 11, also with the W. of W., Lodge No. 341, both of Haines. Mr. Wilcox is a man that takes an active interest in the political and educational matters of his county and is of a broad public spirit and ever in the lead for the advancement of the interests of all, having manifested a very commendable spirit and rare ability during the years of his stay in this county, as well as throughout his entire business course and is highly esteemed by his fellows and respected by all. In addition to his large business interests he has been called to take charge of the post office at Haines and in the discharge of these particular duties he had given perfect satisfaction. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
