Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 243. EDWARD E. CONLEY A prominent resident of Island City, Oregon, was born in Jefferson, Illinois, August 15, 1863, and came West with his father when but a small boy. (See sketch of A. B. Conley). Our subject attended the public school in Kansas during the two years that his father resided in that State and after coming to Oregon he entered the Ascension school at the little town of Cove, later becoming a pupil at La Grande University. He remained with his father on the farm until after he became of age, but in 1887 returned to Illinois to pay a visit to his relatives for the first time since he left there a small boy. During this time he became acquainted with a charming young lady, Miss Rose Smith, to whom he was married April 12, 1888. She was born in Illinois, November 5, 1860, a daughter of William H. and Dicey Jane (Arnold) Smith. Mr. Smith was born in Illinois in 1833. His wife was born, February 8, 1833, and the latter died, August 18, 1886, leaving a family of six children, Mrs. Conley being the second child. Two of her brothers are now in Oregon. The names of the Smith children are as follows: Ben, Rose, Prior, Lee, Curren, Johney, and Eva, wife of Robert Fathing. The subject of this sketch is the third child of A. B. and Josica Conley. He now owns 450 acres, 100 of which is in small grain, besides a stock of seventy-five head of horses, among which are some very fine imported Clydesdale horses. He also has some fine Durham cattle. Mr. Conley is a very fine business man, although he has been considerable assisted by his kind father. Mr. Conley, Sr., was confident of his ability to manage his own affairs before he entrusted him with so large an amount of property. The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Conley has resulted in the birth of his two little boys; William Tuch Conley, born January 25, 1889; and Burl Lee, born October 24, 1890. Mr. Conley has served as Director of his school district for the past two years. In politics he is a Republican and is in a fair way to become one of the leading men of his county. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in May 2005 by Diana Smith.
