E. N. CALEF
     Born in Orange county, Vermont, July 25, 1834.  Here he was raised to
manhood and then moved to Providence, Rhode Island, emigrating from that place
to California, via the isthmus, in 1855.  He went to the mines in Tuolumne
county, going to Siskiyou county, there remaining until he came to Lane county,
Oregon, in 1858.  After working in various places he moved to Springfield
precinct in 1869, and about one year thereafter purchased his present farm.
Married Sarah N. Harlow, March 31, 1863.  She is a daughter of M. H. Harlow.
They have had twelve children.
