Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 597. E. S. LAMPORT has for more than two decades represented the harness-making industry of Salem, and is numbered among the most highly respected citizens. He was born at Woodstock, Upper Canada, in 1844, a son of Edward Lamport, a native of England, who was a prominent wheat commission merchant at Woodstock. He received his education in the Dominion, and in 1863 he went to New Haven, Connecticut. Though a youth of eighteen years he enlisted as bugler in Company F, First Connecticut Cavalry, under Colonel Ives; they were forwarded to the front and did faithful service under Generals Kilpatrick, Custer and Sheridan in the battles of Shenandoah valley, and before Petersburg. After the close of the war the regiment participated in the grand review at Washington, and then did provost duty until August, 1865, when they returned to New Haven. Mr. Lamport then went to Binghamton, New York, with an army friend, Charles Deliber by name, who was a harness-maker, and with him he learned the trade. In 1868 he returned to Canada, but soon after determined to join his brother in Oregon. He first found employment at Oregon City, and there followed his trade until November, 1869, when he came to Salem and opened a harness shop. In the year 1873 he removed to his present store at 289 Commercial street. He carries a choice stock of fine harness, blankets, saddles and horse furnishings, and manufactures all his heavy grade stock. In 1886 Mr. Lamport was married to Miss Lilly B. Stevens of San Francisco, a daughter of Dudley Stevens, a pioneer of California. Two children have been born of this marriage, Merrill and Frederick. He has one child by a former marriage, named Edward. Our subject is a member of the G. A. R. and the A. 0.U. W. He owns the building which he occupies, a two-story brick, and in 1886 he erected a brick building of the same size at 309 Commercial street. In 1892 he also erected a fine residence in the city. He has been closely devoted to business, has striven to attain success, and fully merits the reward of his labors. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
