Studiousness, combined with the habit of thoroughness, has brought Dr. Emil W. Howard to the fore in his profession and his reputation as a surgeon is not confined to the limits of Corvallis, where he has practiced for a period of nine years. He is a veteran of two wars and in both the paternal and maternal lines represents pioneer families of the Willamette valley. He was born February 24, 1878, in Benton county, this state, and is a son of G. W. and Melissa (Williams) Howard, the former a native of Ohio. The grandfather, William Howard, came to Oregon in 1852 in a covered wagon drawn by oxen and took up a donation claim in Linn county. He cleared and developed a portion of the place, .which he afterward sold and then purchased land near Monroe, in Benton county. Dr. Howard's mother is a native of Oregon and a daughter of Martin Williams, who settled in Albany, this state, in 1853. G. W. Howard followed the occupation of farming and is now living retired in Corvallis. In the acquirement of an education Dr. Emil W. Howard attended the public schools of his native county and in 1908 was graduated from the St. Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons. He filled the position of interne in Jefferson Hospital of St. Louis and began his professional career in Brownsville, Oregon, where he resided for ten years. In 1918 he offered his aid to his country, was appointed contract surgeon in the Medical Corps of the United States Army, and during the Spanish-American war had served in the Philippines. He was a member of the first expedition. Second Oregon Volunteers, and served in the Medical Department. He was with the first expedition of soldiers that ever left the United States for foreign soil. Since 1918 Dr. Howard has maintained an office in Corvallis, confining his attention to surgical cases, and has successfully performed many difficult operations. He is a member of the staff of the Corvallis Hospital and enjoys a large practice. He owns a valuable farm near Monroe and another near Corvallis and is a breeder of registered Durham cattle. In 1900 Dr. Howard was united in marriage to Miss Tena Hull, a daughter of William and Ellen (Reasnor) Hull, who came to Oregon in 1852, settling on a donation claim in Benton county. Dr. and Mrs. Howard have two children. Their son, Edward Clifford, who was graduated from the Oregon Agricultural College and is successfully managing his father's ranches, is married and resides in the vicinity of Monroe. His sister, Esther Leona, is the wife of Dr. Kirby Smith and makes her home in Miami, Florida. Dr. Howard belongs to the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and is a Knight Templar Mason and Shriner. Along social lines he is connected with the Country Club and his public spirit is denoted by his affiliation with the Chamber of Commerce. He casts his ballot for the candidates of the republican party but has neither sought nor held public office. He reserves his energies for his profession and is a former president, also a former secretary of the Central Willamette Medical Society. He is also a member of the Oregon State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. Actuated by high ideals of service, Dr. Howard has utilized every opportunity to perfect himself in his chosen vocation and his worth is uniformly acknowledged. Dr. Howard is a captain of the 167th Hospital Company, Oregon National Guard, and has been a captain since this company was organized, about six years ago. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
