Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 285. F. A. BAILEY, M.D. An eminent physician and surgeon of Hillsboro, Oregon, was born in Hardeman county, Tennessee, on January 28, 1839. His parents were William L. and Mary (Wilkinson) Bailey. His father was a Virginian and his mother was a native of North Carolina. She was a daughter of General Frank Wilkinson, a general in the war of 1812. Francis Alonzo Bailey was their third child of a family of eight. He lived in Tennessee until his eighteenth year, and received his education at Woodland Academy and Lebanon College, in that State. He then went to St. Louis, Missouri, preparing himself for a professional career at Pope's College, where he studied medicine for two years. After this, he served for two years as a medical cadet in the Confederate army in General Price's division and was also connected with the hospital service of the Confederate army. In 1864, he came to Oregon, and attended the Willamette University at Salem, receiving there his degree of M.D. in 1870. From there he went to San Francisco, where he attended the Toland Medical College, receiving a diploma from that institution in 1871. In 1872, he came to Hillsboro, engaging in the practice of his profession which he has followed for twenty years, and which has been lucrative and successful. In his practice he has ridden in all directions in all seasons and kinds of weather, both day and night, alleviating the suffering of the sick, knowing but one law for rich and poor alike, by which he has gained a wide favorable reputation, and secured the friendship of a large number of acquaintances. He loves his profession, making it his life study, and has contributed several learned articles to medical literature, which have been published in the Oregon Medical and Surgical Reporter, and in various other medical and scientific journals. He has also contributed some valuable articles to the San Francisco Medical Journal, and to various other publications, together with a number of papers to the Oregon State Medical Society. When this latter association was organized, he became an active member, and for three years was one of its Board of Censors, and served as its president and vice-president. During his residence in Washington county, he has become the owner of several large and valuable tracts of land, and has built for himself an attractive and commodious residence, of modern architecture and improvements, and laid out the ground in a tasteful manner. He has also, in partnership with another gentleman, built two of the finest brick blocks in the city, the last one of which is a very great improvement to the business portion of the city, being a credit alike to the Doctor and the city. Dr. Bailey was married in 1866, to Miss Letitia A. Chambers, a native of Oregon, and a daughter of J. W. and Mary A. Chambers, highly esteemed pioneers to this State. They have six children, four sons and two daughters: The eldest son, Francis J., graduated from the Oregon State Normal School at Monmouth in June, 1891, and is reading medicine with his father. Augustus B. and John W. are at college, while the three youngest, Louisa A., Eva A. and Thomas C., are at home with their parents. The Doctor is a member of the A.F. & A.M. and is a Past Master of Tualatin Lodge. In politics he is a Democrat, and takes an active interest in the political affairs of his county. He has been a member of the City Council and has served for three terms as Mayor of his city. He is prominent in the conventions of his party, who have frequently honored him with nominations to important positions, even suggesting his name as Governor of the State, which office he could no doubt fill to the credit of himself and constituency, possessing the intelligence and ability to understand his duties as chief executive of the State, and the power of his convictions to do what is right. He was at one time tendered the chair of Theory and Practice of Medicine in the medical department of Willamette University, but declined the honor. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
