"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 600. Malheur County. GEORGE A. POGUE, M.D. The genial and affable gentleman whose name initiates this paragraph is not only a man among men possessed of those pleasant qualities mentioned, but as a professional gentleman of ability and skill he ranks with the best physicians of this portion of our commonwealth, having had abundant practice, and is fortified with deep erudition. George A. was born in Fairbanks, Indiana, on June 22, 1856, being the son of Hiram and Rachel (Hunt) Pogue. When a child he was taken by his parents to Shelby county, Illinois, where they reside at the present time. He received a good education and at manhood's estate gave his attention to teaching for a time. Following that period he went to the Kentucky School of Medicine at Louisville, whence he graduated in 1879, and then one year was spent in the Louisville Medical College in post-graduate work. Another year was spent as assistant physician in the free dispensary at that place, when he removed to Firth, Nebraska, practicing medicine for a number of years, then removed to Lincoln, in the same state, in 1886, and in 1889, October 22, he landed in Ontario, and at once he began the practice of his profession and since that time he has been continually on the alert in the care of his large and ever increasing practice, which has ever given him all he could attend to. In addition to his practice the doctor has a fine farm of two hundred and forty acres well improved and watered. He has an orchard of one thousand pear trees and as many more of different varieties, besides abundance of small fruits. In 1901 Dr. Pogue went to Chicago and took a post-graduate course and did considerable hospital work, keeping himself thus abreast of the times in his profession. In the social world the Doctor is affiliated with the I.O.O.F., having been initiated at Firth, Nebraska, on March 17, 1882, being now a past grand of the Ontario Lodge, No. 90, and also has served as representative to the grand lodge. On the 17th of March, 1902, he became a member of the encampment, Lodge No. 49, of this town. He is also a member of the A.F. & A.M., Acacia Lodge, No. 118; W. of W., Arcadia Camp, No. 364, of Ontario. Doctor Pogue takes no part in politics, though in sentiment he is a Republican, but gives his energies to the prosecution of his profession. He has been elected coroner but refuses to serve. On July 13, 1880, the marriage of Doctor Pogue and Miss Emily A. Scott, of Shelby county, Illinois, was solemnized and they have become the parents of two children, Mamie, deceased, and Bessie E. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
