Vehrs has gained a well earned reputation as one of the most skilled and successful physicians and surgeons in the Willamette Valley and stands in the front rank of his profession at Salem, where he has built up a large practice. A native of North Bend, Nebraska, he was born on the 20th of July, 1890, and is a son of Herman and Marie (Graves) Vehrs. The family came to Oregon in 1900, locating at La Grande, where the father engaged in farming. The mother is deceased and the father, who is now retired from active business, is living in Portland. George R. Vehrs received his early education in the public schools, took pre-medic work in Loyola University of Chicago, Illinois, and then matriculated in Jefferson Medical College and Hospital, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, being graduated, with the degree of Doctor of, Medicine and Surgery in 1916. In 1915 he had conferred on him the honorary degree of Alpha Omega Alpha. He served as interne in the Sacramento County Hospital and Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco, and in 1917 enlisted in the United States Medical Corps, in which he was commissioned a lieutenant. He was promoted to captain in France by General Pershing for extraordinary services rendered in battle. He was in the service nineteen months, being overseas one year. After the close of the war he was honorably discharged and engaged in the practice of his profession at La Grande, where he remained until 1924, when he took post-graduate work in Baltimore and Minneapolis, specializing in local anesthesia and major surgery. In August, 1924, Dr. Vehrs came to Salem and has here built up a large practice and gained a high reputation as an operating surgeon, in which work he has shown himself more than ordinarily skilled and trustworthy. On June 5, 1917, Dr. Vehrs was united in marriage to Miss Esther Geneive Stoddard, of La Grande, Oregon, and to them have been born two children, Esther Marie, aged nine years, and Carmen Jean, aged six years. The Doctor is a member of the American Legion, the American Officers of the Great War, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Cherrians, the Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He also maintains professional affiliation with the Marion. County Medical Society, the Oregon State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. Dr. Vehrs has had marked success as a surgeon. His office equipment is complete in every detail, and in keeping with the latest developments in diagnosis and surgery. He is closely devoted to his profession and-commands the respect of his medical colleagues as well as the confidence of the public, while, socially, he is deservedly popular, being a man of splendid personal qualities. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
