"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 312. Baker County. GARRET W. VANDERWALL A splendid representative of the unconquerable Saxon race to which he belongs, Mr. Vanderwall possesses an abundant measure of the thrift and energy which has rendered the Dutch race famous and has made the sons of Holland who have found their way to America such desirable citizens. Our subject is a native of the province of Friesland, born July 10, 1857. He resided in the land of his nativity until twenty-three years of age, acquiring a public-school education and such invigorating physical discipline as the farm affords. In 1880 he came to California, where for a period of four years he worked as a wage earner, saving his earnings that he might some day be privileged to engage in the more independent life of a farmer. The year 1884 found him in Baker county, Oregon, and in possession of a fine farm five miles west of Haines, where he has ever since lived. He is now the owner of two hundred and forty acres, well improved and abundantly supplied with all needed buildings, fences, etc., etc. Mr. Vanderwall is a general farmer, raising such products as he thinks will be most demanded by the market and keeping on the average about fifteen fine dairy cows. Fraternally our subject affiliates with Haines Lodge, No. 11, A.O.U.W. His marriage was solemnized in Goshen, Indiana, on the 24th of April, 1884, Miss Anna Fisher, a native of Indiana, then becoming his wife. Their union has been blessed by the advent of three children, Sylvia, Leona and Roy. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in September 2005 by Diana Smith.
