Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 62. HUGH A. DOWD Dr. Hugh A. Dowd, of Gervais, Marion county, is the only physician in this locality and has built up a large and successful practice throughout the surrounding country. Dr. Dowd was born on the 17th of June, 1894, at Whitehall, Trempealeau county, Wisconsin, and is a son of Lewis H. and Emma (Dissmore) Dowd. He is descended from an old American family, his paternal ancestors having come to this country in 1659, presumably from Scotland. His mother was a native of Massachusetts. The parents settled in Wisconsin, where were born eight children. all of whom located in Washington and Oregon, and six of them are married. Mr. and Mrs. Dowd brought their family to eastern Oregon in 1905 and in the schools of that locality Doctor Dowd secured his early education. Later he attended McMinnville College, where he was graduated in 1920, and then matriculated in the medical school of the University of Oregon, where he won the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1924. He served his interneship and, in July, 1925, came to Gervais and engaged in the practice of his profession. He conducts a general practice of medicine and surgery and covers a wide radius of country, extending from Donald to Hopmere and from Gervais to the Willamette river. His medical and surgical equipment is modern in every respect, including an X-ray outfit and complete physio-therapeutic apparatus, while his rooms were built according to his requirements, the lighting facilities of his operating room being exceptionally fine. In addition to his large private practice, the Doctor is identified with the Marion county demonstration center and he states that the general health conditions of this locality are excellent, an opinion which he is well qualified to express. In the fall of 1923 Dr. Dowd was united in marriage to Miss Vera Hoge, whose family came to this state from Iowa. She is a graduate of normal school and for live years taught in the public schools of eastern Washington, in Idaho and in Forest Grove, Oregon. She takes an active interest in church and missionary work. Dr. and Mrs. Dowd are the parents of a son, John Earl, who was born June 8, 1925. The Doctor is a member of Gervais Lodge, No. 121, I. O. O. F., and his religious connection is with the East Side Baptist church of Portland, while he maintains professional affiliation with the Tri-County Medical Society. In 1917 he tried to enlist for service in the World war, and in 1918 was drafted and was in training at Camp Lewis for nine months. He was in the Thirteenth Division Medical Corps, being assigned to the medical detachment of the Thirty-ninth Machine Gun Battalion, and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant. Though one of the younger physicians of the Willamette valley, his professional ability has gained wide recognition, and he is regarded as a distinct asset to his community, where he commands the respect and esteem of all who know him. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
