"Illustrated History of Lane County, Oregon." Portland, Oregon: A. G. Walling, publisher, 1884. pg. 486. HON. H. G. HADLEY Was born in Oxford county, Maine, in 1815, and there resided until he attained the age of twenty years, at which period of his life he removed to the State of Michigan, and taking up his residence in Detroit, there remained two years. He now removed to Illinois, where he married in 1840 Miss Loretta Cox. In 1849, on the discovery of gold in California, Mr. Hadley proceeded to the El Dorado, but returning in 1851, again crossed the plains in company with Aaron Rose, for whom Roseburg is called, and Arthur Denny, but on this occasion to Oregon. In the fall of that year Mr. Hadley settled on Spencer creek, Lane county, where he resided until 1878, when, selling out, he moved to his present property in what is known as the Hadley settlement, fourteen miles southwest of Eugene City. Mr. Hadley was the first justice of the peace in Lane county, appointed by the county commissioners in 1852, and in 1853 was elected to represent that district in the territorial legislature. This gentleman has proved himself in all his affairs to be a man of uprightness and integrity, just in his dealings and unswerving in the rectitude of his purpose. An excellent view of his residence adorns this work and proves the indomitable will of its owner to rise to the supremest comforts of a charming home and surroundings after long years of worry and toil. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
