Lockley, Fred. "History of the Columbia River Valley, From The Dalles to the Sea." Vol. 3. S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1928. p. HARRY H. COFOID Harry H. Cofoid, vice president and manager of the well known livestock commission firm of Kidwell & Caswell, of Portland, has had many years of active experience in this business and has earned the reputation of being the finest judge of cattle in the west, while as a business man lie is the peer of any of his contemporaries. Mr. Cofoid was born in Putnam county, Illinois, on the 7th of April, 1875, and is a son of Nelson and Alferetta (Carr) Cofoid, the father having for many years engaged in farming and stock raising in Illinois. Mr. Cofoid received his educational training in the public schools and in a business college in Davenport, Iowa, and became connected with the United States bureau of animal industry, in which work he gained his first scientific knowledge of livestock. Later he worked as a buyer and seller in the stockyards at Chicago, Illinois, and was also for awhile with a livestock commission firm in the Union stockyards of that city. He put in about fifteen years altogether in the livestock business in that city, including a period as buyer for the Schwarzschild &. Sulzberger Company. In 1909 he came to Portland as buyer for that concern, with which he remained about three years, or until they closed their plant in this city. Mr. Cofoid then became connected with Kidwell & Caswell as a salesman, but later was promoted to manager, and in 1920 was also made vice president of the company and is still holding these two offices. He has given close and scientific study to everything relating to the livestock industry, on which he is considered an authority, and he has long been one of the most prominent and influential factors in the business at this point. In 1900 Mr. Cofoid was united in marriage to Miss Carrie F. Unthank, of Putnam county, Illinois, and to them have been born two children, namely: Walter B., who attended the University of Oregon and is with the General Motors Company at Seattle, Washington, and Harry E., who attended the University of Oregon and is now assistant to the manager of the interior decorating department of Olds & King, of Portland. Mr. Cofoid is a stanch republican in his political affiliation and fraternally is a member of Imperial Lodge, No. 159, A. P. & A. M.; Oregon Consistory, No, 1, A. A. S. R.; AI Kader Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., and the Shrine Patrol. Sterling integrity has characterized his life in all of its relations and no resident of this locality holds a higher place than he in the confidence and respect of those who know him, while among his associates he is deservedly popular. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
