"Illustrated History of Lane County, Oregon." Portland, Oregon: A. G. Walling, publisher, 1884. pg. 480. HULINS MILLER (Deceased) -- Was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 4, 1812. His father lies in a forgotten grave at old Fort Meigs, Ohio, where he fell, under Harrison, in the war of 1812. Mr. Miller received a good education for that day, and he afterwards became a merchant. He gave up the business and retired to a village called Liberty, Union county, Indiana, and began life in the then wilderness as a school teacher. Here he married Margaret Witt a near relative of General Burnside's mother, and that of Gov. Morton. After vibrating between Cincinnati and the little village on the Ohio and Indiana line for three or four years, he pushed his way still further into the wilderness. He settled in a dense forest in what was then called the Miami Reserve, in Marion, Grant county, Indiana. As the county settled up he again taught school. Here he was elected a justice of the peace. The land so hardly won in Indiana, had only been paid for and a good foothold established when a clock peddler came along with a wagon load of clocks. This sort of incipient Jim Fisk professed to fall ill, and, being so very eager to get rid of his clocks and return to Boston, persuaded Mr. Miller to give a mortgage on his farm and take the load of clocks. And so it was that the little home was lost and the family set out for Oregon. Being very poor, they had to stop a year or two before crossing the Missouri river, and work for teams and supplies. In 1852, they reached this state, and settled on a high, long grassy ridge, in the Camas valley, Lane county. Here he resided until his death on February 2, 1883, George M. Miller, is a son of this pioneer, and born in Lane county, May 17, 1853. He was admitted to the bar and is now practicing his profession in Eugene City. Joaquin Miller, an elder son of Hulins Miller is particularly mentioned in the general history of Lane county. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in May 2005 by Diana Smith.
