Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 330. JULIUS ALM That America is the land of opportunity to the man of character and industry has been strikingly exemplified in the career of Julius Alm, who is now one of the prosperous and influential merchants of Silverton, Marion county, for he came to this country a poor boy, ignorant of our language and customs, and by the force of his character and his determination, directed by sound common sense, forged ahead to his present position of honor and independence. Mr. Alm was born in Norway in 1862 and is a son of Gunerius and Oline Alm, the family deriving its name from the name of the farm on which it lived. Julius Aim received lids education in the public schools of his native country and then was employed in stores for a time. In 1885, when about twenty-three years of age, he emigrated to the United States, going direct to North Dakota, where, as soon as he had acquired a working knowledge of the English language, he obtained employment in a store. He remained in North Dakota until 1893, when he came to Silverton, Oregon, and was here employed in stores until 1903, in which year he established his present business, opening a small grocery and men's furnishings store. He. prospered in this enterprise and as his business increased he found it necessary to move to larger quarters, locating where the opera house now stands. There he remained until 1908, when he bought his present property and erected the substantial building in which he is now located, thus obtaining more space and better facilities for handling his growing trade. In 1922 Mr. Alm admitted his sons Otto and Henry to a partnership in the business under the firm name of Julius Alm & Sons, while another son, Julius, Jr., is employed in the store. Mr. Alm founded his business on sound principles, courtesy, accommodation and square dealing, and through the years has maintained mutually pleasant relations with all who have patronized him, so that his trade has shown a steady and substantial increase. In 1892, in North Dakota, Mr. Alm was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Havelmoen, also a native of Norway, from which country she came to the United States at about the same time as her future husband. To Mr. and Mrs. Alm have been born nine children, namely: Chris, who lives in Los Angeles, California; Otto, who is married and is in business with his father, as is Henry, who is next in order of birth; Frank, of Longview, who is credit man for the Columbia River Mercantile Company; Julius, Jr.; Dina and Bertha, twins, who are students in the University of Oregon; Nina; and Carl, who died in infancy. All of the children were born in Silverton. Mr. Aim has shown a commendable interest in the welfare of his community and has served one term as a member of the city' council. He is a past president of the Chamber of Commerce and is vice-president of the First National Bank. He is a Scottish Rite Mason and a Noble of the Mystic Shrine, and belongs to the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Woodmen of the World and the White Shrine of Jerusalem, while he and his wife are members of the Order of the Eastern Star. Genial and friendly in his social relations, he has a wide acquaintance throughout this section of the county and is held in high esteem by all who know him. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
