Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 616. J. B. KELLOGG For upward of twenty years, Mr. J. B. Kellogg has been connected with hotel life in the city of Portland. He was born in Richland county, Ohio, in 1829. His parents Sylvannus and Isabelle (Long) Kellogg were natives of Pennsylvania, subsequently settling in Ohio, where Mr. Kellogg engaged in the farming and tanning business. In 1837 he removed to Steuben county, Indiana, where he built the first tannery in that section of the country, and there conducted an extensive business, and there both parents were laid in their final resting places. The had six children, four of whom are now living. J. B. Kellogg was educated at Ontario College in Lagrange county, and lived with his parents until about twenty-one years of age, engaging in farm duties, or assisting his father about the tannery. In the spring of 1850 he went to Elkhart, Indiana, and engaged in teaming. And in 1852 he crossed the plains. He started with one spring wagon and two horses, and three ox teams, well equipped with three cows to supply milk on the journey. Six months were consumed in crossing, but with plenty of provisions, and no trouble with the Indians, they had a pleasant trip, and landed at the Dalles. There rafts were built, upon which were loaded the wagon, women and children, and the cattle were driven down the trail. At the Cascades portage was made and thence with "Jimmie" Stephens and his ferry-boat they came to Portland, where they landed, October 22, 1852, the town site chiefly covered with brush and timber. They then proceeded to Washington county and proceeded to locate donation claims, while subject and James Bennett also leased a sawmill and engaged in the lumber business, rough lumber selling at $25 per 1,000 feet. This was continued about three years, when Mr. Kellogg sold his interest in the mill, but still resided upon the farm, where he engaged in the manufacture of Spanish saddle trees, which he covered with rawhide. In this he built up quite an extensive trade. He also purchased leather from Amos King and started harness-making, selling his first harness for $60. In 1867 he sold his farm and settled in Portland, in the dairy business until 1869, when he purchased a large residence on Madison street, between Front and First streets. He made some additions to the house and then started a hotel, which he operated until 1873, then in partnership with Squire Risley, and they opened a hotel on the corner of Front and Morris streets, and just as they were nicely started the great fire of 1873 swept through the city and destroyed all of their possessions. Cast down, but not disheartened, Mr. Kellogg immediately rented a three-story building on the corner of Second and Alder streets, and in the morning following the fire he was furnishing meals. In 1882 Mr. Kellogg opened the Merchants' Hotel, on the corner of Third and D streets, and operated that for three years, and then returned to the National Hotel, where he continued as the popular host, until August 16, 1891, then selling to the firm composed of his son Ernest, and D. E. Perley, who are continuing the business. Our subject was married in the spring of 1852, to Miss Jane Davies, daughter of James Davies. This union was blessed with three children: Ida, wife of J. O. Hawthorn, of Astoria; Ernest E.; and Annie, wife of J. D. Long, of Fresno, California. Mr. Kellogg is the only surviving charter member of the Samaritan Lodge, No. 2, I.O.O.F., and is a member of the Ellison Encampment, also K. of P. He owns valuable property on the corner of Fifth and Market streets, and also at Fourteenth and N streets, East Portland, where he resides. He is a Republican in politics, and has served one term as a member of the Common Council. In 1861 he was elected Assessor of Washington county two years, then acted as Deputy Sheriff for two years longer. He is genial in his relations with mankind, and enjoys the respect of a large circle of acquaintances.
