"Illustrated History of Lane County, Oregon." Portland, Oregon: A. G. Walling, publisher, 1884. pg. 492. JOST D. PETRIE Was born in the town of Little Falls, Herkimer county, New York, November 18, 1822. He spent his early life in the towns of Little Falls and Herkimer, where he received a common school and academic education. Mr. Petrie was raised a farmer, and has made farming his life work. It may truly be said that he is a self-made man, having received little or no assistance or control after the death of his father, which occurred when he was about eleven years old. He moved to Concord, Jefferson county, Wisconsin, in September, 1843, and bought State land which was at the time a dense forest of heavy timber. Mr. Petrie did his full share of pioneer work incident to those days in that region; as he had little or nothing but his hands to begin with, he literally chopped his farm out of the wilderness and converted it into a comfortable home. He married Miss J. F. Holcomb, February 25, 1847. They have eight children: Ellen L., Kossuth, Jost D. Jr., Ellery C., Ernest F., Gertrude A., Irving W., and Harley H. Jost D. Jr., was killed while braking on the C.P.R.R. in 1876, and lies buried at Sacramento, California. Kossuth, Ernest F. and Gertrude A., died quite young and lie buried in their native town of Concord, Wisconsin. Ellen L., who married mr. S. G. Lockwood, Ellery C., who married Miss Mary A. Ransom, Irving W. and Harley H. are all residing in this county. Mr. Petrie has been, ever since the party was organized, and still is proud to be a republican. He has been town clerk and chairman of the town board of supervisors of his adopted town in Wisconsin for many years, and represented his district in the legislature of Wisconsin in 1861 and 1867. Having for many years had a strong desire to secure a home on the Pacific Coast in 1882 sold his homestead in Wisconsin and removed to Siuslaw in this county, where he purchased 1,440 acres of excellent farming land where he now resides. Mr. Petrie is also the principle owner of the Siuslaw grist and saw mills, now in process of erection, to be propelled by the waters of the Siuslaw river. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
