Lockley, Fred. "History of the Columbia River Valley, From The Dalles to the Sea." Vol. 3. S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1928. p. 37. JOHN E. BAILEY John E. Bailey, vice president of the Forest Grove National Bank, has been a resident of this community for fifty-three years, during which period he has been actively engaged in important affairs, in which he has met with well deserved success, and is regarded as one of Washington county's worthy and respected citizens. Mr. Bailey was born in Greencastle, Putnam county, Indiana, on the 4th of November, 1845, and is a son of John and Eleanor (Jenkins) Bailey, of whom the former was born in Maryland and died in 1850, while the latter was born in Kentucky. The family left Indiana in 1856 and located in Iowa, where they lived until 1873, when they came to Hillsboro, where they have since remained. John E. Bailey attended the public schools of Iowa and graduated from Knoxville Academy, in that state, after which he taught in the country schools of Marion county. On coming to Washington county, he taught in the Shute district school, east of Hillsboro, after which he taught at Cornelius. In the spring of 1875 he came to Forest Grove and taught school for two years, and then engaged in farming just below his present home, following that occupation for ten years, 1877-87. In 1888 he became the Southern Pacific station agent at Forest Grove and in 1890 engaged in merchandising, under the firm name of Haines & Bailey. About five years later he bought his partner's interest in the business, which he carried on under his own name until 1917, when he sold out and retired after occupying the same building for twenty-seven years. In 1907 Mr. Bailey helped to organize the Forest Grove National Bank, of which he was elected vice president, which position he still holds, and in 1909 also acted for awhile as cashier. Mr. Bailey was married in Forest Grove in 1877, to Miss Minnie Shipley, who was born in Wisconsin and was a daughter of M. H. and Elizabeth Shipley, who came to Oregon about 1873. Mr., and Mrs. Bailey had two children: Mary, who was born in Forest Grove in 1878, is the wife of W. D. Clarke, who is divisional engineer of the state highway department at Salem, Oregon, and they have two children, Doris, now eighteen years of age, and Robert Bailey, ten years of age. Fred died at the age of three years. The mother passed away in 1890 and in 1893 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mr. Bailey was married to Miss Ella M. Luck, who was born in 1854 at Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, and is a cousin of Mr. Bailey's first wife. She is a daughter of James S. and Mary (Nye) Luck, of whom the former was born in England and came to this country when twenty-four years old, and the latter in Bedford, Massachusetts. They came to Forest Grove in 1893 and lived here until their deaths, the mother dying in 1902, and the father in 1913, at the age of ninety-eight years. Mrs. Bailey is a member of the city library board and takes a deep interest in the civic affairs of her community. Mr. Bailey is a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, in which he has passed through the chairs, and is a member of the Congregational church, while Mrs. Bailey is a member of Christian Science church. Mr. Bailey has served as a member of the city council and as a school director and is a trustee of Pacific University. Everything affecting the welfare and prosperity of the community has enlisted his attention and support and he is regarded as a splendid citizen, constant and dependable. Because of his business success, his high character and his kindly and agreeable manner, he enjoys the esteem and good will of all who know him. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
