"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 601. Malheur County. JAMES E. LAWRENCE Although the gentleman whose name appears above is not among the oldest pioneers of Malheur county, still his energy, enterprise, and wise conduct here, coupled with his characteristic integrity and uprightness, make him one of our most valued citizens, and it is with pleasure that we are enabled to grant to him this consideration in the history of the county. James E. was born in Washington county, Arkansas, on November 13, 1873, being the son of William S. and Mary D. (Elms) Lawrence. In 1880 the parents brought the family across the plains with teams and settled in Baker county. In the spring of 1884 they removed to upper Willow creek, in the vicinity of Ironsides, and there remained until 1898. Then our subject was appointed deputy sheriff under the well known Julian D. Locey, and at the latter's death in June, 1901, he was made sheriff of Malheur county. Mr. Lawrence enjoys the no small distinction of being the youngest sheriff that ever served in the state of Oregon, and such has been the excellency of his labors in that capacity that he was again nominated by the Democratic party in 1902 and seated by a good majority. Mr. Lawrence has a fine band of cattle on the upper Willow creek and he is numbered with the progressive and leading stockmen of the country. On September 21, 1898, Mr. Lawrence and Miss Louisa, daughter of J. H. and Louisa rose, wee married and to them have been born one child, Mary Louisa. Mr. Lawrence is at present noble grand in the I.O.O.F., Vale Lodge, No. 100, while Mrs. Lawrence is a member of the Rebekahs, Golden Rule Lodge, No. 64, Mr. Lawrence also affiliates with the A. F. & A. M., Acacia Lodge, No. 118, of Ontario. Mr. Lawrence acquired his education in the common schools and has been a close observer and careful student of men and business since those days, and is today one of the most enterprising and capable young men of our county, and he is well worthy of the popularity which is his to enjoy, and the esteem in which he is held. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
