"History of Southern Oregon, Comprising Jackson, Josephine, Douglas, Curry and Coos Counties. Compiled from the Most Authentic Sources." A. G. Walling, Publisher. Portland, OR. 1884. pg. 539. JAMES F. SHEFFIELD Is a native of Huron county, Ohio; was born August 5, 1825, and there resided until the spring of 1850. On hearing of the wonderful wealth to be found on the Pacific coast he started in the spring of that year for California, and there followed mining until 1852, when he came to Oregon, and in 1853 to Douglas county, and purchased his present valuable farm, consisting of 470 acres two and a half miles south of Roseburg, on the banks of the Umpqua, on which he has erected a fine farm residence; a view of which appears in this work. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
