"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 606. Malheur County. JOHN HOFFMAN This gentleman is one of the prosperous stockmen of Malheur county and has labored well here for the upbuilding and advancement of the county, while he has acquired fine holding in real estate and stock, being one of the leading men of his section. His fine ranch of two hundred acres, well improved and skillfully handled, lies about one mile north from Juntura postoffice. Mr. Hoffman was born in Switzerland on February 7, 1856, being a son of natives of that land, and he was reared on a farm. He received his education in his native land, and in 1884 came to the United States. He settled first in Florida, spending one year in that place, and next we see him in Wasco county, this state, and later in Ellensburg, Washington. All these years he was industriously laboring and gaining a goodly competence to start in the stock business, and in 1893 he made his way into Malheur county and selected his present place, which he bought, and he has devoted his attention mainly to handling sheep since that time. He also raises other stock and does a general farming business. At the present time Mr. Hoffman has a number of thousand of fine sheep, besides his real estate holdings, and so forth. Mr. Hoffman has made a success in his venture of handling sheep, which demonstrates his sagacity, painstaking care, and industry in this labor. In December, 1900, Mr. Hoffman married Mrs. Mosley, a native of Kentucky, and one son has been born to them, named John Francis. Mrs. Hoffman has three daughters by her former husband, and they are named as follows: Susie, Mattie and Nannie. Mr. Hoffman is a member of the A.O.U.W., and stands well in the community, and is considered one of the substantial stockmen and public-minded citizens of the county of Malheur. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
