"Illustrated History of Lane County, Oregon." Portland, Oregon: A. G. Walling, publisher, 1884. pg. 489. HON. JOHN KELLY Was born in Dublin county, Ireland, in May, 1818. In 1838 he emigrated to Canada and there resided until 1841, at which time he crossed to the United States and settled in Franklin county, Vermont. In 1843 he removed to Racine county, Wisconsin, whence in 1847 he proceeded to Mexico, having joined the Third Wisconsin Volunteers under Col. Rolls, with which he served until 1848, when he was detailed to stay at Fort Leavenworth in charge of a government train. Here he remained until October, 1849, when he came to Oregon, passed the winter in Oregon City, and in the spring accompanied General Lane to the Rogue River country, being present at the making of his famous treaty with the Indians, more particularly described elsewhere in this volume. Upon the ratification of the treaty, Mr. Kelly went to California and remained until February, 1851, when he returned to Oregon and settled in Douglas county. Here he resided until October 1866, when he took up his abode in Springfield. Mr. Kelly was Collector of Customs at Portland from August, 1876 to August, 1880, during which time his family resided in that metropolis. He served eight years as Land Register at Roseburg, and was appointed one of the three Commissioners to accept a portion of the Northern Pacific Railroad in Montana. He settled permanently on his present farm in 1871. Mr. Kelly married Miss Elizabeth Parker, and has eight surviving children: Mary Louisa, Now Mrs. H. B. Miller; Theresa Maria, now Mrs. L.
