Came to Oregon with his father, Smith Collins, in 1846, by way of the "South Road," or Applegate's cut-off, his company being the first that came that way. Settled in Polk County; went to California in 1853, and remained for a time; served in the Yakima war; was admitted to the bar in 1859. Married Miss Mary Whiteaker in 1861, who died in 1865, leaving one child. In 1867 married Miss Mary E. Kimes.
