Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 1077. J. O. HANTHORN Closely connected with the canning interests of Astoria we find the subject of this sketch, who was born in Westerville, Franklin county, Ohio, August 20, 1851. His parents, N. M. and Anna M. (Spillman) Hanthorn, were natives of the same State, where the father was connected with mercantile interests, and in Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri and Iowa. In 1862 he procured a prairie outfit, and with ox teams removed his family to Oregon, first locating in Yam Hill county. He farmed in Yam Hill and Washington counties until 1867, when he settled in Portland and followed mercantile life until the winter of 1870, when he removed to Boise City, Idaho, and for eight years was Auditor and Recorder of Ada county, being elected and re-elected by the Democratic party. In 1881 he removed to Weiser City, Idaho, and after one year in the hotel business he was elected Probate Judge, and is still the incumbent of that office. Our subject was educated in Eastern and Oregon schools. At the age of sixteen he started to support himself, and, as a foundation to build upon, he first applied himself to learning the trade of tinner, which, having accomplished, he pursued until 1870, when his interest was called to the salmon canning interests. He passed one season in the tinning department of the Eagle Cliff Canning Factory, owned by Hapgood & Humes, and then followed his trade during the winter in Portland, Oregon. In 1871 we again find him in the same cannery. He then followed his trade in Portland until the spring of 1873, when he was employed as superintendent of the cannery of R. D. Humes, at Bay View, Washington, and continued in that capacity until the fall of 1876, when he commenced building his present spacious cannery at Astoria, in partnership with William Wadhams and Wesley Jackson, or Portland. They commenced packing during the season of 1877, and put up 16,000 eases, which output has steadily increased, with experience and increased facilities, until their annual pack has reached about 30,000 cases. Their establishment is conveniently arranged for conducting tins large business, and the standard of their pack is high in England and America. The firm name of J. O. Hanthorn & Co. is continued, although the controlling interest has centered with the subject of this sketch. Mr. Hanthorn was married in Portland, in 1874, to Miss Ida J. Kellogg, a native of Oregon, daughter of J. B. Kellogg, a pioneer of 1852. They have had four children: Claude B.,Wesley H., Ida Hazel, deceased, and Ida Faith. Socially, Mr. Hanthorn affiliates with the I. O. O. F., K. of P. and A. O. U. W. In business he is energetic, resolute and enterprising, and is numbered among the representative business men of Astoria. His name is a familiar one among the canned-goods dealers through the United States and Europe. He owns valuable property in Portland, Oregon, also in Astoria and Clatsop county, Oregon. In fact, he is what is termed one of Oregon's self-made men. Transcriber's additional notes: Marriage of James O. Hanthorn of Wakiakum Co, Wash. Terr. to Ida J.
