"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 370. Baker County. JOHN WOOD This enterprising farmer and market gardener of the vicinity of Baker City was born in Rochester, New York, on November 11, 1875, his parents being John and Isabella (Cotchfer) Wood, natives of England. He continued to reside under the parental roof until sixteen years old, receiving such educational advantages as the public schools afforded, but he then determined to give inception to his independent career, so came out to Oregon. Soon he settled upon land seven miles south of Baker City, a tract of swale or bottom land, well suited to the production of hay and vegetables, and to that kind of farming he has ever since devoted himself, marketing his products in Baker City. He is an enterprising, industrious and progressive young man, belonging to the great and numerous class who work quietly and unostentatiously and who are yet the real strength of a community, the men behind the guns in its battles. Mr. Wood was married on December 24, 1896, the lady being Miss Lucinda, daughter of George and Lucinda (Bigley) Springer, both of whom are residents of Baker county. Of this union one child, Ben, was born. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in September 2005 by Diana Smith.
