Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 551. JOHN ROBERT COOLEY Among the successful farmers and sterling citizens of Lane county stands John Robert Cooley, whose well improved and productive farm lies in the Mt. View school district, near Row river, where he has lived for seventeen years. He is a native of Lane county and comes of pioneer stock, his father, Alex Cooley, having come from Missouri across the plains, with oxen and covered wagon, in 1852, coming to the Willamette Valley by way of Portland. He bought a farm south of Cottage Grove, part of which his children still own. To him and his wife, Eliza (Shields) Cooley, were born four children, namely: George William, who lives in Paisley, Lake county; John R., of this sketch: Currin, deceased, who was married to Miss Myrtle Hambrick and had two sons and two daughters, all of whom live in Eugene; and Jucla C., who became the wife of V. D. White, a mechanic in Cottage Grove. They have three sons, one of whom is married and has a child. John R. Cooley was educated in the public schools of Latham and attended the Oregon Agricultural College, where he was graduated, with the degree of Bachelor of Science, in 1898. During the following five years he was engaged in banking and commercial lines, and in 1910 he located on his present farm, which consists of two hundred and nine acres of splendid land, about half of which is devoted to small grains, the remainder being pasture land, devoted to sheep, hogs and dairy stock. Mr. Cooley is a practical farmer, showing excellent judgment in all of his operations, and is meeting with well deserved success. On July 22, 1900, at Albany, Oregon, Mr. Cooley was united in marriage to Miss Jessie V. Cox, who was born at Brownsville, Oregon, and is a daughter of W. A. and Lucretia (Elaine) Cox. Mrs. Cooley was educated in the public schools of Brownsville and Corvallis and the Oregon Agricultural College, where she was graduated in 1899. Mr. Cooley is a member of the Knights of Pythias. He has taken a commendable interest in the public affairs of his locality and has served fifteen years as a member and clerk of the school board. A man of high ideals, clean morals and sterling manhood, he is a fine example of good citizenship, and throughout his community he commands respect and good will. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
