"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 623. Malheur County. JAMES R. KENNEDY In the subject of this article we have one of the young and energetic stockmen and agriculturists of Malheur county, who is demonstrating that he has capabilities to take up with credit the work of the early pioneers and carry forward the development of the country while he properly augments his own exchequer in a commendable and worthy manner. Mr. Kennedy was born in the Idaho basin, on December 16, 1873, being the son of William and Isabella (Russell) Kennedy, native of Ireland. About 1878 the father brought the family to the Malheur river in the vicinity of the Kennedy butte. It was 1885 when they came to lower Willow creek, and there our subject attended the common schools until he was eighteen and then finished his schooling in an institution in Walla Walla. >From that time forward he engaged with his father in the stock business, the home place being located on lower Willow creek. They operated together until 1901, when they divided their herds, and our subject is now living five miles south from Dell postoffice, where he has a fine farm of one hundred and sixty acres of bottom land, which produces abundant crops of alfalfa, having about three hundred tons of that each year. He has a comfortable house, good barn, fine orchard and a nice bunch of cattle. It is much to the credit of Mr. Kennedy that when he began life he had no capital, but by good management and industry he has accumulated a very handsome showing, which but demonstrates the mettle an capabilities of the man. In addition to that mentioned above, Mr. Kennedy carries a life insurance policy for three thousand dollars in the New York Mutual. The happy event of the marriage of Mr. Kennedy and Miss Ettie Stott, of Walla Walla, and a native of Missouri, was celebrated on August 28, 1900. This worthy couple are valuable additions to the society of their section and they are held in high esteem and are capable and substantial members of the commonwealth. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
