Malheur County. JEROME S. DERRICK The subject of this article is one of the good and substantial citizens of Malheur county, and is eminently deserving of a representation in this work, since he has wrought for the upbuilding of the country while he has also operated a good stock ranch of one-half section two miles north from Ironside, where the family home is now situated. Jerome S. was born in Roane county, east Tennessee, on February 9, 1841, being the son of Andrew and Julia (Brown) Derrick. The family resided in Tennessee until 1860, then came via New York and Panama to San Francisco, remaining in Sonoma county until 1864. Then they removed to the vicinity of Milton, in the Walla Walla valley, and there farmed. There, also, in October, 1867, our subject took unto him as wife, Miss Hester, daughter of James and Elizabeth (Cole) Weaver, and three children were born to them as follows: Arthur A., married to Minnie Tague, and living on lower Willow creek; Effie E., formerly wife of Lewis Allen, now deceased, and she is now the wife of John Turner; Julia I. and William Allen of California. On October 22, 1873, death took from his home Mr. Derrick's wife. On April 24, 1875. Mr. Derrick married a second time, the lady of his choice on this occasion being Miss Mary A., daughter of Alfred and Emeline (Enos) Watts. Mr. and Mrs. Watts crossed the plains in 1859 with ox teams. Mrs. Derrick then being three years of age. They came from Cass county, Missouri, direct to the Willamette valley, and in 1870 settled near Weston, Umatilla county, where Mrs. Watts died. Mr. Watts was a minister in the Methodist church. In 1880 our subject removed to Morrow county and thence, in 1887, to the vicinity of his present place. The following year he went to Baker county, and four years later went to the vicinity of Portland, and then, in 1896, came back to Willow creek, bought a saw mill and operated the same until the fall of 1901, when he sold it and confines his attention now to handling horses at his home place. He has a good house, barns, outbuildings, and all satisfactory improvements on the ranch. Also, Mr. Derrick has a large bunch of good horses. Mr. and Mrs. Derrick are the parents of the following children: William A.; Hattie J., wife of Ernest Locey; Horace M.; Claude M.; John E.; Merle I. LeRoy, deceased; Albert and Delbert, twins, the former deceased; Della, deceased; Wallace M. Mr. Derrick takes an active part in the educational advancement of the country, and manifests the zeal and intelligence of the true American citizen. Mr. Derrick's father died at the old home place near Milton, and the mother passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kate Henderson, wife of a prominent business man in Walla Walla. Mr. Derrick is one of the substantial and stanch men of the community, and is held in esteem and respect. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in February 2006 by Diana Smith.
