Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 236. JOHN W. HUNT As a dealer in meat John W. Hunt is prominently identified with business affairs of Salem and his enterprise, resourcefulness and ability have also enabled him to win success in other lines of endeavor. A native of Missouri, he was born in Newton county in 1867 and his parents were Richard W. and Melissa (McCall) Hunt. He was seven years old when the family went to Illinois and his early instruction was received in the rural schools of Marshall county, where he lived until 1879. His parents then removed with their family to Nebraska, where he continued his studies. Subsequently the family went to Kansas and while residing in the Sunflower state John W. Hunt followed agricultural pursuits. He had been trained under his father and in 1891 journeyed to Salem, becoming connected with the Oregon Land Company. During the summer of 1892 he was in Olympia, Washington, and aided in building the first street car line in that city, afterward assisting in the task of electrifying the old horse car system in Salem. For twenty years he operated a fruit ranch of one hundred and ten acres in Marion county and after disposing of the farm located in Salem. He purchased a half-interest in the Center Street feed shed and in partnership with C. G. Schramm conducted the business for fourteen years. After it was sold Mr. Hunt reentered the meat business, in which he had engaged for a short time in 1892, and became the proprietor of the Price shop, of which he was the owner for two and a half years. Going to California, he spent about two years in the Golden state and on his return to Salem formed a partnership with J. W. Schaller. They opened a meat market at No. 263 North Commercial street and now enjoy a large trade, established by good management and honorable dealing. Mr. Hunt has wisely invested his capital in Salem realty and also owns valuable business property in Los Angeles, California. In 1890 Mr. Hunt was married in Phillips county, Kansas, to Miss Ella Mitchell, a native of Missouri, and four children were born to them, namely: Blanche, who is deceased; Echo, who is the wife of Foy Cole, of Alberta, Canada; Grace, who is connected with the state accident commission and resides at home; and Kenneth, a student. Mr. Hunt gives his political allegiance to the republican party and is affiliated with the Woodmen of the World and the Chamber of Commerce. He heartily indorses projects for Salem's advancement and his personal qualities are such as command respect and esteem. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
