MORGAN one of the prominent business men of Hillsboro, is a native of Missouri, born November 4, 1858. He is the son of Charles R. Morgan, also a native of Missouri. Mr. Morgan came with his family to Oregon in 1864. He was then in his sixth year. They first resided in Yam Hill county a year, and then went to Washington county, where he was raised and received his education in the public schools. When he became of age he received the appointment of Deputy County Clerk, and served under A. Lewelling, A. W. Lewelling and John Steot. During those years he became an expert in the business of a clerk, and in 1844 he was renominated for the place by the Republican party, and was elected. After serving for two years he was renominated and re-elected, and served his second term, which was as long as he could serve, there being a rule to that effect. Mr. Morgan's service in the office was highly satisfactory, and through it he has become widely and favorably known to all the citizens of his county. After the close of his term of office, he engaged in general mercantile business in Hillsboro, under the firm of Hughes, Morgan & Rogers. They do a large retail general mercantile business, and all of the young men being enterprising business men, and as they always follow honest methods in their dealings with their customers, they have a great portion of the trade that naturally belongs to Hillsboro from Washington county. Mr. Morgan was married in November, 1886, to Miss Susan Brown, of Oregon, the daughter of William and Susan Brown, worthy pioneers of Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan have one son, Edwin. They live in a nice house in the city of Hillsboro. Mr. Morgan is a member of the I. O. O. F., and has twice been elected and served as a member of the City Council.
