Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 723. JOHN W. NOBLE the Assessor of Clackamas county and a member of the City Council of Oregon City, was born in Lake county, Illinois, January 20, 1852. His father, Isaac Noble, was born in 1818, in Edinburgh, Scotland, but emigrated to the United States, in 1843, settling in 1850 on a farm in Lake county, Illinois. Here he reared his family and still resides. He married, in his native land, Miss Jane Flemming, native of his own town. Soon after their marriage the trip across the ocean was made, and soon they were established in a home of their own, in which they have been very successful. They had six children, one of which, William was killed at Nashville, Tennessee, while defending the stars and stripes." John Noble was reared on his father's farm, attending school in the winter and working during the summer. When he became old enough he taught school four months in the year and worked on his farm the remainder of the time, but, in time sold his farm and removed to the southern part of his county. In 1875 he came to Oregon, purchased a farm, built on it and there lived, improving it for fourteen years, and then sold it and came to Oregon City and purchased a residence lot, where he has since resided, engaged in speculation. In 1888 he was elected Assessor of the county and served in that office so satisfactorily that he was re-elected, and is now serving his second term of two years. In 1891 be was elected a member of the City Council, in which capacity he is also serving. In March 18, 1877, Mr. Noble was married to Miss Louisa Ford, a native of Oregon, and the daughter of Robert Ford, who came to this State in 1852. Mr. and Mrs. Noble have four children, all born in Oregon, namely: Jennie R., Emory J., Maud E. and John E. The family are highly respected, and Mr. Noble is a worthy member of I. O. O.F. Mr.Noble's father was a man of integrity of character and his constant effort was to impress upon his son the principles that governed his life and actions, and Mr. Noble, our subject has proved a worthy pupil of that good man. In his capacity as a public officer he has been conscientious and capable, making a safe and reliable officer in the county, where he has made a host of friends. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
