"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. p. 476. Grant Co. JAMES W. TABOR A native of Grant county, with which our volume is primarily concerned, one who has labored here constantly since his birth for the upbuilding of the county and the development of its resources, a man of uprightness and integrity, possessed of good ability and sound principles, the subject of this sketch is deserving of mention in any volume that deals with this section, and it is with pleasure that we grant him consideration here. Mr. Albert G. Tabor came to the place now occupied by Canyon City on July 4, 1862, being one of the very first white men to set foot on that soil, and he continued there and in the vicinity of old Granite, and also in other sections of the county in mining until the time of his death, which occurred on July 4, 1893. He was a prominent man of Grant county, a leader in progression and among the councils for the political welfare and industrial development of the county. He married Miss Mary J. McCousland, a native of Indiana, he himself being native to New York, and to them were born three children, William J., living near Union, Oregon; Mattie M., wife of Oscar O. Benton, one of the owners of the Red Boy mine, and residing in Portland; and the subject of this sketch, he being born December 31, 1865. The mother is still living in Portland, Oregon. Our subject grew to manhood and was educated in this county, and at once took up the industry, then the leading one in the county, and doubtless to be so for some time to come, that of mining. He operated at placers until ten years since, and now he is working at quartz mining. He is at present in company with Messrs. Thornburg and Benson, the firm being owner of the Rialto mine. Our subject owns the Stevens addition to Granite besides other property, and is one of the leading men of the town. The marriage of Mr. Tabor and Miss Margaret McNulty, a native of Canyon City, was solemnized at the Monumental mine, in Grant county, July 9, 1892, and to them have been born the following children: Helen E., Albert C., and Alice. Mrs. Tabor's parents were early pioneers of Canyon City. Mr. Tabor is fraternally affiliated as follows, being a member of the K. of P., Lewiston Lodge. No. 83, and of the A.O.U.W. of Granite, Lodge No. 117. Mr. Tabor has been interested in some of the important mining properties in the county, such as the Red Boy, at its discovery, and he owned one-half interest in the Concord and was the discoverer and locater of the Ibex. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
