Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 288. L. D. GRIGGS To such men as L. D. Griggs is Lane county indebted for its present high standing as an agricultural community, for he has in his special field of effort consistently endeavored to maintain the highest standards of production, and as a breeder of pure bred stock he has few equals in his section of the state. Mr. Griggs was born in Indiana, in 1862, and is a son of T. J. and Nancy E. (Boggs) Griggs, also natives of the Hoosier state. In 1866 the father took his family to Pawnee county, Nebraska, where he cast in his lot with the pioneers, taking up a homestead, which he operated during his remaining active years. On retiring from business, he moved to Beatrice, Nebraska, where his death occurred in 1914. His wife died in California in 1925. They were the parents of. ten children, namely: L. D.; Anna E., deceased; J. C. and T. J., Jr., who are living in Oklahoma; Leslie, deceased; Elizabeth, who lives in California; L. M. and J. L., in Nebraska; Carrie E., deceased; and May, of California. L. D. Griggs was reared on the home farm in Nebraska and is indebted to the district schools for his education. When twenty-two years of age he went to Gage county, Nebraska, where he leased a farm, which he bought in 1891, and cultivated until 1900, when he sold out and bought two hundred acres of land in Saline county, that state. He remained on that place until 1918, when he sold it and came to Oregon, purchasing sixty acres of good land, three miles northeast of Eugene. Here he began breeding and raising pure-bred Jersey cattle, having brought the nucleus of the herd with him from Nebraska, and he now has thirty head of splendid animals of the purest breed. He also raises pure bred Hampshire hogs and pure bred Barred Plymouth Rock chickens. There is a steady demand for all the stock he markets, for his reputation as a breeder is well established in this section of the state. Mr. Griggs takes a justifiable pride in his achievements in the breeding of blooded stock, owning some of the best in this section of the valley. One of his cows, "Will Do," four years old, in January, 1927, produced sixty-two and one-tenth pounds of butter fat, and that without special care or feeding. He is a member and stockholder in the Farmers Creamery of Lane County and he and his son are members of the Lane County Pure Bred Jersey Association. Mr. Griggs has brought his farm up to a high state of development, all of the farm buildings being of a substantial character and in good condition, while his well cultivated fields produce abundant crops of hay and grain, as well as corn for silage. In February, 1896, Mr. Griggs was united in marriage to Miss Fannie Bailer, who was born in McLean county, Illinois, a daughter of Albert and Sarah Bailer, who were natives of England. The father, a cabinetmaker by trade, came to the United States in 1864 and settled in Illinois, where he was employed in car shops until 1918, when he came to Eugene, and bought a home, which he occupied until his death, in 1924. His wife passed away in 1922. They were the parents of eight children: Mrs. Armstrong; Mrs. Fannie Griggs; Bert, who lives in Nebraska; H. A., of Minnesota; Frank, in Montana; Lucy, who is in Portland, Oregon; William, in Washington; and Lawrence, deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Griggs have a son, Cecil L., who graduated from the high school in Eugene, after which he entered the Oregon Agricultural College, at Corvallis, where he took the course in dairying and was graduated in 1926. He is associated with his father in the operation of the home farm and is also serving as rural editor of the Eugene Guard. He is a member of the Grange and the Farmers' Union. Mrs. Griggs was graduated from the University of Illinois and taught school for thirteen years in Illinois and Nebraska. Mr. and Mrs. Griggs are members of the Presbyterian church in Eugene. He has in every possible way contributed to the general advancement and welfare of his locality and well deserves the confidence and esteem in which he is held. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
