Parsons, Col. William and Shiach, W. S. "An Illustrated History of Umatilla County and of Morrow County." Spokane, WA: W. H. Lever, 1902. p. 558. MYRON J. SLAGHT The industrious and enterprising agriculturist whose name initiates this paragraph is one of the younger men who is displaying energy and skill in the pursuit of winning bread from the productive soil of Morrow county, coupled with stock raising, wherein he is achieving a success quite commensurate with his thrift and care. He was born in Schuyler county, New York, on March 16, 1880, being the son of Asa B. and Melinda (Cronk) Slaght, who were both natives of New York and now deceased. He received the educational discipline to be obtained from the public schools of his native place and remained there until he was nineteen years of age, following the occupation of oil pumper for three years. He came west in 1898, landing in Morrow county on December 3 of that year and located on his present place of three hundred and twenty acres on Balm creek, six miles south from Heppner, devoting his attention to farming, stock raising and teaming. In addition to his land he has fifteen head of stock cattle and twenty head of horses. On November 6, 1898, in Andover, New York, he was married to Miss Mable C., daughter of David A. and Emily J. (Wallace) Herren, who were pioneers to this state in an early day. Mrs. Slaght's great-grandmother, on her father's side, lived in the Willamette valley to the age of ninety-six years and when she was ninety-two years of age she participated in a display for the Oregon state fair, knitting fancy work with number one hundred cotton thread. Mr. Slaght's paternal grandfather was one of the pioneers of New York state, emigrating there from Holland, while his maternal great-grandfather was a native of Poland. The capabilities of this sturdy young citizen of our county are manifested already during the short stay in this his chosen home and he had demeaned himself in a very commendable manner, displaying sterling moral qualities and principles of worth. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
