Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 7. MATHIAS MOMB No resident of Lane county commanded to a greater degree the respect and confidence of his fellowmen than did the late Mathias Momb, who after a long and active career died at his home here February 12, 1927. Possessing good judgment, and far-seeing in all his business operations, he created a fine homestead and was regarded as a man of more than ordinary worth, being not only successful in his individual affairs, but also contributing to the general welfare of his community. Mr. Momb was born at Rendaren, Norway, where he was reared and educated. In 1885 he came to the United States and located in Minnesota, where he bought a farm, to the operation of which he devoted his energies for fifteen years, selling it in 1899 and coming to the Willamette Valley, where he bought one hundred and sixty acres of land, located near Eugene. He farmed that place until 1908, when he sold out and for a few years lived in Eugene. He then bought one hundred and thirty-six acres of good land on the McKenzie river, near Walterville, and gave his close attention thereto during his remaining active years. The house and barn which stood on the place when he bought it were originally the Walterville hotel and livery stable, located at the edge of the town. Here he started a dairy, beginning with ten cows, and the herd now numbers twenty-five registered Jersey cows and a registered, imported sire. Mr. Momb rebuilt the house and barn, erected a silo and hog house and made many other substantial improvements, which added materially to the value of the property. In 1890, in Minnesota, Mr. Momb was united in marriage to Miss Gina Finstad, who is of Norwegian parentage, and to them were born three children, namely: Malena, born in 1895 in Minnesota, who is the wife of John Holm, of Eugene; Peter, born in Minnesota, September 18, 1896: and George B., born in Eugene, March 30, 1900. All of the children received high school educations, and since the death of their father the sons are operating the home farm, in the work of which they are deeply interested. They employ a tractor, a grain separator and a feed grinder, and in addition to their own farm work do considerable custom threshing and feed grinding. They keep their cattle in the best possible condition and sell the milk in Eugene. They have the entire farm in cultivation and raise all of the feed required for the stock. They have shown themselves up-to-date farmers and are carrying on in a thorough and practical way the homestead which their father so well established. The Momb family has long been regarded as one of the leading families of the county and the Momb boys are held in high esteem for their judgment, industry and sterling personal qualities. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
