Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 312. NICHOLAS SCHMALTZ The consensus of public opinion places Nicholas Schmaltz with Mount Angel's leading business men, and his success has been commensurate with his industry, enterprise and ability. He was born in the southern part of Russia but the family is of German origin. In 1893 he sought the opportunities of the United States and rented a tract of one hundred and sixty acres of land near Eureka, South Dakota. He cultivated this for a year and then went to North Dakota, in which state he spent nine years. During that period he operated a ranch, which he leased, and was also employed as janitor and as a section hand on the Great Northern Railroad. In 1902 Mr. Schmaltz came to Oregon and for eight years devoted his attention to the development of a farm of one hundred and twenty-six acres in the vicinity of Mount Angel. He cleared about thirty-five acres of the property, and in all there were ninety-two acres under cultivation, on which he raised hops and grain, also conducting a dairy. In 1910 he erected a modern residence in Mount Angel and embarked in business as a house mover. He gradually enlarged the scope of his activities and is now engaged in general warehousing under the style of X. Schmaltz & Sons, of which firm he is the executive head. The other members are John and Nicholas Schmaltz, Jr. They are dealers in fuel, fence posts, drain tile, brick of various kinds, cement, gravel, sand, wall and land plaster, lime, lumber, shingles, lath, doors and windows, glass, paints, oils, varnishes, gas, lubricants, building and roofing paper, a complete line of builders' hardware, farm implements, potatoes, onions, hay, straw, flour, mill, poultry and dairy feeds, ornamental and field fencing, walking and drive gates. They have large warehouses. The business was established in 1915 at its present location; the ground was cleared for the buildings and spur tracks were laid to expedite shipments. The business is the largest in this locality, and in 1924 a branch was established at Scotts Mills, where the flour mill and store are managed by Nicholas Schmaltz, Jr. Both sons have inherited their father's business foresight and acumen. He also continues his agricultural operations and owns three ranches in this section of Marion county, having valuable timber and coal on a portion of his property. He specializes in the growing of prunes, and keeps hogs, goats and cattle. He is a scientific farmer, and his prosperity is the legitimate reward of untiring application and honorable dealing. In 1892 Mr. Schmaltz was married in Russia to Miss Elizabeth Welk, also a native of that country and of German parentage. They have a family of five children: John, who is married and has five children; Marie, who is the wife of Ruben De Jardin; Nicholas, Jr., who is married and has two children; Magdalene, who married A. P. Miller and has ore child ; and Lucy, who is associated with her father and brothers in business. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in June 2016 by Diana Smith.
