"Illustrated History of Lane County, Oregon." Portland, Oregon: A. G. Walling, publisher, 1884. pg. 485. HON. ROBERT BEVINS COCHRAN The subject of this sketch, son of James and Elizabeth (Bevins) Cochran, was born in Howard county, Missouri, March 4, 1820. Having resided on his father's farm, until 1845, in the month of April of that year, accompanied by his wife, father and mother he started to cross the plains to Oregon, while en route his son John being born. After a tiresome and fatiguing journey occupying six months they finally arrived in Lane county and settled near where the town of Coburg has since arisen. Here Mr. Cochran took up a donation claim, which he still owns, and there dwelt until 1879, in which year he abandoned agricultural pursuits and took up his residence in Eugene City, purchasing his present domicile. In 1856, Mr. Cochran was elected to the office of member of the Territorial legislature and having served one term to the evident satisfaction of his constituents, in 1858, he was re-elected to the like position in the State legislature, and once more, in 1860, he received the suffrages of the people for the same office. For the Upper House he was defeated in 1862, by Hon. C. E. Chrisman, but in 1866, he was again chosen to fill his former position in the legislature. In 1868, he was elected State Senator, defeating the popular candidate Hon. W. W. Bristow, and in 1874, he again received a majority of votes for the same distinguished position, over Hon. John Kelly of Springfield, and during this year was chosen president of the senate which he held until within two days of the close of the session, only resigning on accounty of the death of one of his children. In 1878, he defeated Hon. B. J. Pengra, of Springfield, for the office of State Senator, and upon the expiring of his term was succeeded by Hon. Geo. B. Dorris, he refusing to again come forward, even though earnestly solicited by his friends. It will thus be seen that Mr. Cochran has been for nearly eight and twenty years connected with the legislature of Oregon, during which time he has served his county faithfully. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
