"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 475. Grant County. RICE R. McHALEY One of the most enterprising citizens of the county and well known throughout its precincts is the man of whom we now have the privilege of speaking, and who has wrought faithfully and with wisdom during the years of his residence in this region, and who has augmented materially the development and progress of the county and the interests of good government and the welfare of all. Born in Marion county, Oregon, in 1865, being the son of G. W. and Mary (Jackson) McHaley our subject received his educational training in this state and at the age of twenty-one years entered the stock business, where he was very successful for a period, having his headquarters at Prairie City. In 1890 he was appointed postmaster under Harrison, in the Prairie City office, and for five years he discharged the trying and arduous duties of this position. During this time he was also engaged in the butcher business and following the time when he laid down the duties of his office, he again embarked in raising stock, also engaged in blacksmithing until he was elected county clerk on the Republican ticket in 1898. Following his term of faithful service he was re-elected and is at the present time discharging the duties of this office. He owns a farm of one hundred and sixty acres, three miles north of Prairie City, besides considerable other property. The marriage of Mr. McHaley and Miss Lizzie, daughter of Nathan and Mattie (Carpenter) Hubbard, was celebrated in Prairie City in 1887. Mrs. McHaley's parents were old pioneers of the state. Mr. McHaley's father was a member of the state legislature, being elected in the spring of 1882. Mr. McHaley is a man of stanch principles and unswerving integrity, and has manifested fine ability and keen foresight in his career, while his geniality and upright conduct have won him hosts of friends from every part of the county and given him the respect and esteem of all. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
