"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 245. Baker County. SOCRATES C. MANN It now becomes the pleasant task for us to outline in brief the salient points of the career of the estimable gentleman whose name initiates this paragraph and who takes rank as one of the prominent men of the county and is one of its most substantial citizens, having spent here many years of his life, and here he has accumulated the generous amount of property with which he is at present possessed, it being the material witness of his skill energy and wisdom which have been so patiently displayed. The birth of Mr. Mann was on December 13, 1856, in Plainfield, Vermont, being the son of Abel and Lucia Mann, and in his native place he remained until he was nineteen years of age, receiving a good education in the Barre Academy, which was in the town of the same name. Upon the completion of the course in that institution he sought his fortune in the west and ultimately landed in Baker county in 1877, where he soon commenced operations as a farmer and stockman, which eh has followed since with such enterprise and skill that he has accumulated eight hundred and forty acres of land, three hundred of which is timber land, besides other valuable property interests, as well as considerable personal property and stock. He affiliates with the Fraternal Union. Mr. Mann was married to Miss Ellen E., daughter of William B. and Adaline Powers, and a native of Baker county, Oregon, on December 25, 1884, the ceremony taking place at North Powder. The fruit of this union is three children: Dora E., Leo L., Charles S. Mr. Mann has so demeaned himself in all his affairs and walk that he has won the entire confidence of his fellow and is esteemed by all who may have the pleasure of his acquaintance. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
